Captains Club Hotel adopted charities

Robert Wilson, Operations Director at the Captains Club is off to India

It was always my ambition to learn to ride a motorcycle before I reached my 40th birthday – I achieved this.

It has always been my ambition to visit India and it has always been my intention to make a real difference in the World before my 50th birthday.

Enduro India has given me the opportunity to combine all three as I have agreed to participate in the Enduro India challenge in January 2010 with a motorbike ride across India. I will be riding no less than 2000 kilometres over 15 days from Goa to Kottayam, raising much needed funds for the Rainbow Trust, the Wildlife Conservation Society India and UNICEF.

This is where you can play your part as I need your help and support.  I have committed to raising in excess of £4500 for the charities, setting a personal goal of £7000.

This is a true, once in a lifetime adventure and I will joined by 100 fellow riders from all around the globe, each with the same ambition, to raise funds for these three extremely worthy causes.  This trip epitomises the word endurance and will stretch me to the limits, but it is a goal that I have to achieve to prove to myself that I am able to complete a real challenge producing a very real result for others.

We will be holding a number of fundraising events over the next 6 months so please keep an eye on our calender of events.

Kind regards

Robert

The Youth Cancer Trust

Youth Cancer Trust

The Youth Cancer Trust is a small national charity which provides free activity based holidays for young people between the ages of 14 and 30 who are living in the United Kingdom or Irish Republic, or are patients of hospitals in the UK and are suffering with cancer. Youngsters can come on a holiday if they have been in if they have been in remission for up to 5 years. Each youngster can be accompanied by a sibling or friend.
The charity was first established on the instigation of Brenda Clark, who had recently lost her only child, Tracy Ann (aged 21), from cancer. It was very quickly realised that young cancer patients were obtaining great benefit from a short holiday. The youngsters provide comfort and encouragement for each other and Bournemouth has all the facilities needed for an enjoyable holiday for young people. We provide holidays for approximately 200 young cancer patients each year.

Since forming our charity, we have grown slowly but steadily. At every stage of our development, we have taken great care to understand the youngster’s needs and to learn from them and their parents about the service we provide. It has become more and more apparent that we boost confidence, provide invaluable ‘fun’ and ‘stress free’ periods and, more than anything else, bring normality and hope back into the young peoples’ lives. Occupancy grows year by year and we are more certainly in demand.

“The thing that sets the Youth Cancer Trust apart from other charities is that it doesn’t just provide a place for ‘ill people’ to go, its provides a refuge from real life, a break from the hardship of treatment and recovery that people who have cancer have to face, but more than that, it enables people to achieve experiences that they thought they would never have again. I have seen people’s confidence increase in the space of 4 days of arriving at Tracy Ann House. What the Youth Cancer Trust achieves is incredible and I can’t thank them enough.” (Richard – Cancer Patient)

Mosaic

Mosiac

Mosaic is a Dorset wide charity set up in April 2007 to provide support and advice to bereaved children, young people and their families who have experienced the loss of someone special in their lives.

Every 30 minutes a child in the UK is bereaved of a parent. This means that 20,000 newly bereaved children each year have to find a way to live with a range of confusing and conflicting emotions.

“From the minute dad died I just remember feeling an emptiness which hasn’t stopped since that time”

If these emotions are not recognised, expressed and validated they can have damaging effects in later life for the child, family and our community as a whole.

The practitioners at Mosaic help young people to re adjust to life after the death of a parent or sibling and provide the support and guidance that many need in order to cope throughout the grieving process, helping them to understand the nature of loss and enabling young people to live with their grief and rebuild positive futures. Families who have used the service have said:

“It has helped me a lot with my behaviour at school. Before, if someone annoyed me I would just hit them, but now I’ve learned to take a deep breath or just to walk away” - Simon age 12

“They’re really good to talk to, Erica and Sarah [the counsellors]. I like going – I didn’t at first, but now I do. They really listen and make me see things differently and understand myself more” – Tommy age 10

“The counselling has had a positive effect not only on the boys, but it has helped all of us. Without it, the boys would [have] continued to get angrier, and the whole family would have suffered” – Tommy and Simon’s mum

Most of the referrals that Mosaic receive come through schools and GPs. However Mosaic runs an open access service and accepts referrals from all statutory and voluntary agencies.
Families can also contact Mosaic via the website, by telephone or email for advice and support, as can anyone who is concerned about a grieving child. Work with our individual, community and corporate supporters so that you in turn feellue and that
Whilst some statutory funding for working with children and families has been made available, Mosaic relies heavily on donations from the community, charitable trusts and groups as well as organising their own fundraising activities. However, the existing funding available to Mosaic is insufficient to sustain the high level of support required to meet the increasing number of referrals to the service.

There are many ways in which people can support Mosaic, as individuals, in groups or through corporate business, by donating, volunteering or attending fundraising events. We value all our supporters and aim to make them feel they have made a real difference to the lives of bereaved children and young people in Dorset.
